What is so special about green tea?
Green tea is much more than a refreshing drink of tea, but provides many benefits for health as well. The Chinese and Japanese have enjoyed the healing qualities of green tea for thousands of years but has not been until recently that scientific research has shown the health benefits of drinking green tea.
All teas (green, black and oolong) are harvested from the same plant (Camellia sinensis). The processing method creates the different types. Green tea contains the highest content of various antioxidant compounds (polyphenols) that have been shown to be beneficial in the fight against certain cancers, to help reduce cholesterol levels and blood pressure to help prevent food allergies, to reduce the risk influenza and infections, and reduce the effects of aging. Vitamins C and E and beta carotene are also common in green tea. Fluoride is found in sufficient green tea help reduce plaque formation and infections of the mouth. The caffeine content in green tea is about one fourth to one eighth of coffee and less a can of cola, but varies with the time of preparation.
green teas are as varied and unique as the wines. Its uniqueness depends on growing region, climate, season, time of harvest and the type of processing. Many varieties are available in various grades. Some exotic teas are collected only one day a year! Most green teas come from Japan, China or India. Tea processing varies among different regions so that is only a basic overview. The best teas are from the most aromatic, young, top two leaves and unopened leaf bud of the plant. After harvest, the leaves are green out in the hot air to wilt. Once they are soft, traditionally fried in pans. In Japan, can be cooked vapor. This prevents the leaves of oxidation (fermentation), as in black tea. The leaves are rolled to give them durability, their characteristic shapes: twisted, Curly or ball, and as a means to regulate the release of natural substances and flavor when soaked. The final step dries the leaves on the shoot. This stabilizes the fragrances and flavors conserves natural and green. The aim of processing the tea leaves in green tea is to preserve the healthy substances, natural and active.
Sometimes flowers are placed in the tea leaves during the drying process to impart a soft floral flavor tea, such as the popular jasmine green tea.
There hundreds of different green teas, most of which never reach the U.S. Some of the more common green teas are:
- Gyokuro – The best green tea.
- Bancha – the "everyday" Japanese green tea. This tea is made from sheets of low-grade taught slightly astringent taste.
- Genmaicha – a tea made from a combination of brown rice and roasted Bancha general. Some of the bursts rice during the roasting process like popcorn. This is a light tea with a slight nutty flavor.
- Sencha – a, delicately sweet, green tea Japanese needle-like leaves available in many grades.
- Kukicha – a soft Japanese tea made from the branches or stems of the tea bush.
- Gunpowder – a strong Chinese tea rolled into pellets originally tight to preserve freshness during the long journey from China to Europe.
- Dragonwell – A favorite Chinese tea, long, flat leaves.
Some green teas are more exotic and expensive such interesting names as: monkey paw White Dragon Pearl, Lucky Dragon, Jasmine Dragon Tears and Bird Nest.
Therefore, for those of you who have tried green tea and do not care the taste, give it a second chance. Green tea requires a faster cooking time of most of the teas to avoid becoming bitter. Use about one teaspoon per cup of water. Bring water to just under a boil or a boil and simmer for 5 minutes before pouring the tea. Green tea just need a time of preparation of one or two minutes before removing the tea leaves in your cup or container. Adjust the amount of tea or the duration of development of beer to your liking. Used tea leaves actually be reused for a second cup of tea, beer, only about 20 seconds. Green tea can also be made with other herbs such as ginger, peppermint, lemon balm and jasmine flowers to change the flavor and still get the health benefits.
