Hammersley Bone

A Brief History of Tenerife
In 1797 Admiral Lord Nelson attacked the capital of Santa Cruz, but the Islanders beat him (he also lost an arm for your work!). We are confident that your visit to Tenerife will be equally memorable, but much nicer! Nelson had a little more success, the course the story might have been altered dramatically. In fact he had won, the island these days could be filled with English-speaking people, sitting in meat eating the typical English pub 'and chips (… er, come to think of it, it is).
The Canary Islands were known to ancient Greeks and other ancient civilizations. Tenerife's original inhabitants were called Guanches (the name is widely used as the name of the inhabitants of the Islands Canary, which is convenient, but not exact). No one knows for certain where the first settlers of the Canary Islands come from, or even when they arrived. Modern archaeological findings suggest that reached across the Atlantic from North Africa throughout the period 200 BC C. There are some similarities between the names of languages and the place of the Berbers of North Africa and what has been deciphered from the ancient language of the Canary Islands (of which there are very few examples). There are, however, the chronicles of the first sailors to report canaries as if it were a race of tall, blond hair, blue-eyed people, perhaps suggesting a northern European origin. And what are the canaries are considered the cultural heritage? The most popular theory is unabashedly romantic idea that the Canary Islands are the highest peaks, and in fact all that remains of the continent Lost Atlantis, which was written about (and perhaps invented by?) the Greek philosopher Plato.
Before the Spanish arrived, the island was divided into nine tribal kingdoms, the names of those who are still in use in modern Tenerife – Abona, Adeje, Anaga, Daute, Icod, Guimaras, Tacoma, Tegueste and Taoro.
On the death of a mencey or king, the title passed to his brother, who had to kiss the bones of the dead mencey as part of his inauguration! Time by Spanish forces began their conquest of the Canaries in 1402, Tenerife had already established a reputation as an important commercial center of trade because intercontinental your location. The Canary Islands were also popular hunting ground for slave traders. The population of the island in the C15th, before the conquest, was estimated at about 30,000, with the highest proportion living in the north direction is more favorable conditions for agriculture and livestock. Strangely, the islanders had no knowledge of boats or sea travel, nor had any knowledge of metallurgy (no metal resources on the island). Stone was the main tool they had to work and in this sense, the island had remained in the Stone Age.
The islands fell one by one to the Spanish, the last Tenerife itself was finally submitted after heavy Spanish loss in July 1496 by Alonso Fernandez de Lugo, who founded the city of La Laguna (La Laguna – There was a long time but it dried) as its capital. The Laguna is why the oldest city of the Canary Islands and remains the capital until 1723. It was built inland, in part because of favorable agricultural conditions and partly to be further from the attention of hackers.
Thus began a new chapter in the history of Tenerife. Under the leadership of newly installed Spanish leaders, the islands quickly adapted and benefited from the higher civilization they were getting soaked, and claimed themselves as the business major commercial link between Europe, Africa and the 'new world' of America. This in turn attracted the unwanted attention from around the world of pirates, hoping for a piece of newfound wealth, entire nations, like Britain, which I just wanted everything, including the earth itself! As mentioned at the beginning, the most famous victory of the island in a nation at war was the defeat of Nelson Santa Cruz in 1797.
In the early C19th Spain was experiencing political instability and in 1812 administrative policies and energy for all Canary Islands surrendered to Santa Cruz de Tenerife. This situation remained unchanged until 1927, when the Canary Islands are divided into two provinces, east and west. Santa Cruz remains the capital of the western province of Tenerife, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro, while control of Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura was delivered to the City Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (Gran Canaria).
With the strengthening of economic ties between the Canaries and the Americas, began an exodus small scale of the islanders of the Americas, including Venezuela and Cuba, to seek a better life. Canarios Today many have relatives living there.
Apart from the growth of tourism, an important factor in the development of C20th Tenerife was the Spanish Civil War and the rise of a General Francisco Franco. Franco had been a very senior soldier in the Spanish army, but the Republican government, fearful of political trends right Franco, sent him (in effect, a kind in exile) to Tenerife in 1936. It was from there that the coup was planned in secret and the Canaries were consequently first to fall to Franco's forces and the first to suffer mass executions of writers, trade unionists, socialists, anyone Franco militia considered a threat. On the one hand, it is true to say that Franco brought a new prosperity in Spain and the Canaries, but local feeling is that the regime also imposed too many restrictions on Canarian autonomy, a feeling that many still expressed today.
Today, with tourism firmly settled and accepted part of everyday life, islanders treat aliens in much the same way they treat others. If you walk into a supermarket here is not likely that you will be greeted with broad smiles and forced jokes. You as likely to be ignored if they are in the middle of the conversation with a friend at the time, but this is not rudeness or ignorance, is simply the way things here. This is probably due to a feature of the islanders share with the rest of Spanish, which is summarized in one word – Tomorrow ("Tomorrow"). Here Nobody likes to run around (some drivers from the highway exception!), as the pace of life is slow and casual, many shops closed for a three-hour lunch break or 'siesta'. Drivers can park your car where it is convenient for them, light their cigarettes when they imagine a smokescreen, or deposit Garbage at the exact moment when it becomes garbage, regardless of the current rules on when or where these things are supposed to do! But when the day party to come to relax, and where better than on the premises are world champions at halftime!
