Moss Landing, California: From Toxic Fish to Monterey Bay Marine Sanctuary
The day trippers up and down the California Highway often forget one of the fun of a journey from one side to Moss destination port. It is a good stretch, a short walk on the beach and maybe some seafood if not paranoid about mercury or anything else that may be within the creatures of the ocean.
In reality Moss Landing is not just a speed zone for power plant large and small trinket shop Baja. The city is surrounded by fields of strawberries and artichokes, but this is changing. In a couple of hours you can see almost all of Moss Landing and then be on your way.
But these days if you strike up a conversation with a local it is likely to be an oceanographer and is not a commercial fisherman.
Watsonville and Santa Cruz to the north and Salinas and Monterey to the south, one would be hard to find a better location California coast Moss Landing. Also is hard to believe that the same water that slowly winds Elkhorn Slough finally mix in the Monterey Canyon a mile deep off the coast of Moss Landing. And it's hard to believe that most of Moss Landing is just a sandbar.
Have you ever wondered what happens to a sand bar in an earthquake? In Loma Prieta Earthquake in 1989 Moss Landing discovered. Sea water began to seep through the sand as if the sand bar were falling apart. What in reality Big One?
However, earthquakes do not kill the fishing industry. Moss Landing is a relic of the oxidation of a once mighty industry that are not Many fishing boats in the port. Say it is not for Joe, but with all the science and technology entering the Monterey Bay, but none have been able to find how to quickly save the fish.

It used to be fun to walk to fishing and browsing shops and related businesses, even as many fish are gone too. Employees of Long Marine Laboratory or Marine Laboratories in Monterey Bay Cal State do not buy bait, ice and tackle.
In fact, you can eat, but is likely to bring their own bean sprouts and tofu burritos. No fried fish and chips Crowns and this group … also know very well what is that fish and the fat is in fried ..
Seen as a tourist stop, ten Moss Landing years got in on the end of the antiques boom that brought a string of antique shops in the center of Moss Landing. Some are still limping today. Business is down, but rents are better than Monterey or Caramel. The year Moss Landing Antiques Fair help, but the days of the week is particularly slow in the antiques and collectibles trade. Something like fishing boats … pretty quiet.
Phil Fish Market and Eatery are cooking but like everything has lost something, as it got bigger. In the old days around the menu was good. Now it is beaten or lost, even with the old favorites like seafood platter.
Phil somehow could not scale of six tables to 50 and maintain its quality. The fish just is not cool, but the quality always decreases proportionately with the growth, right? However, Phil is one of the few restaurants in walking distance.
It is clear that the major point of reference and unsightly is the Moss Landing Power Plant, a couple of monster stacks designed to generate 560 megawatts of power built right on the estuary of Elkhorn Slough.
There has been a budding movement for ecological ends to replace the eyesore with another energy source, but unfortunately nobody has been able to figure out exactly what power source would be. The plant emits about one million tonnes of carbon dioxide a year and makes about a billion gallons of hot water in the cold Pacific Ocean daily.
Solar and wind energy will not cut it here but the winds in the section of Moss Landing Bay Monterey is constant and strong. The fact is that no one on the Central Coast is ready to give up the power yet. Fish maybe, but not electricity.
Hopefully the big one does not come soon our beloved Moss Landing will still be on the map of California.
