English Teddy Bear Makers
Collectors and indeed lovers of teddy bears have certainly heard of the British manufacturers Teddy Bear, Dean, Merrythought, Chiltern, Chad Valley, but there were numerous other manufacturers of teddy bears from his birth in 1902, that have come and gone and rarely heard.
More and more manufacturers of teddy bears are being discovered and, despite the big names are well documented many of the manufacturers smaller have faded into obscurity.
Steevans Manufacturing Co. Very little is really known about this business. We know it was founded in 1908 and all production ceased in 1920. Produced teddy bears were tagged with a metal button in the ear with the words "Steevans, England" written in it, along with a serial number engraved on it. However, many of these old teddy bears are well without any marks at all. Because the factory survived for a very short period of time, these bears are very rare today. Because they are rare and intimate look good because they are highly coveted by collectors. These teddy bears many characteristics of other early British teddy bears, including black eyes start button and filling hard.
Lefray Toys Ltd. – In London in 1948. Established in 1960 he moved to St. Albans in Hertfordshire, where they remained for nine years before once again moving south Wales. In 1980, Lefray took over the British manufacturer, Royal stuffed animals.
Lefray was granted a special license to produce their own version of Rupert Bear, which are still occurring.
Lefray Teddy Bears have many features including British Teddy Bear mohair and gold big ears.
Harwin & Co. – Founded in 1914. Eagle Works in Finsbury Park, London Harwin produced his first teddy bear in 1915 at the Fair London in 1916 launched a series of mascot teddy bears. – Ally Bears. These beautiful teddy bears dressed in the uniforms of the allied forces of World War World. The Harwins sales manager, a Mr. Taylor, had been previously employed as a salesman for the Steiff company, therefore, some similarities between the two brands. The difference is very obvious, very few dressed Steiff their teddy bears, while Harwin dressed most of their teddy bears.
The company ceased in 1930, however, after suffering the effects of post-war depression.
Wendy Boston – Boston Ken and Wendy create a soft toy company in 1945 South Wales Wendy Boston teddy bear revolutionized manufacturing when it produced the first fully washable teddy bear. 1954. This company was also responsible for pioneer Teddy Bears safety eyes.
Wendy Boston focused on the production of teddy bears that were easy to care for, so wash off fabrics synthetic rubber and foam used as stuffing. This, of course, teddy bears made their very popular among young children because they may be washed periodically and safely make them much more hygienic to be handled by children.
Most of Wendy Boston Teddy Bears were made without joints foot undefined.

Unfortunately, the company was acquired by Denys Fisher Toys in 1968 and production ceased completely in 1976.
Plummer Wandless & Co. – Formed by Daphne Plummer and her husband John, after Daphne buy a soft toy rabbit in 1944 and dismantled it to see how it was made. She started making teddy bears, soon after, only to earn some pocket money. When John left the Army after the war, saw the potential Teddy Bears in Daphne and he left his job in the production of furniture to start trading in them. John was helped financially by his friend Dudley Wandless, John Dudley and go into business together in 1946.
John was the designer and sheepskin used with a silky luster. In 1967, they were producing about 70,000 teddy bears.
In 1971, Daphne Plummer died and the business was sold. However, their teddy bears live ….
One of the most famous company Teddy Bear was a bear named Tinka Bell, who was based on the famous fairy from Peter Pan by JM Barrie. During the 1950's, the teddy bear was extremely popular in effect with literally thousands of them that are manufactured and sold each week. Tinka Bell came in many versions and sizes, and are now collected by Teddy Bear collectors around the world.
The British Teddy Bear certainly has tons of appeal to collectors, especially some of the older bears dating from about the time of the First World War.
If you find a British Old Teddy Bear that is definitely worth buying either one of the most famous manufacturers or an manufacturers more difficult to achieve, some of which are listed above.
